The 2011 Sharecropper Project is still active. Winter wheat was planted in the fall of 2010 in the field on the southwest corner of Warden Avenue and Stouffville Sideroad. The crop was harvested at the end of July and the yield and quality were excellent. The crop is being stored and will be sold for the best price possible. We thank our project partners Galten Farms of Unionville, St. John's United Church in Oakville and FaithLife Financial.
On November 30th the Canadian Foodgrains Bank Regional Meeting was held at Bethesda. The Executive Director of the Bank, Jim Cornelius, and the Ontario Regional Coordinators, David & Kathryn Mayberry, along with participants in other local growing projects attended the meeting. Mr. Cornelius provided an update on the current activities and priorities of the Bank and also gave a presentation on his recent fact-finding tour of Africa. It was very interesting to hear how the proceeds of our Sharecropper program are helping the world's hungry people affected by droughts and crop failures. It was also interesting to hear about some of the successful entrepeneurs and activitists that are making a difference in their communities in Africa. The Mayberry's told us about the Harvest For Hunger event in October where 110 combines harvested 160 acres of soybeans in under 12 minutes to raise over $250,000 for the Bank. Awesome! Check out the short video of the event.
The 2010 Sharecropper project reaped a bountiful harvest! From the proceeds of the soybean crop and other donations, over $31,000 was raised for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. That amount translates into $150,000 in food and other aid to the world's hungry when matched by CIDA.
There is still time to participate in the 2011 project. For more information about our Sharecropper program and how you can participate in it see the links on the left or call the church office at 905-477-1731.
